It was during our often awareness creation campaign under the Albinism Society of Kenya (ASK) dubbed ‘Niko na haki ‘Campaign program In Vesu, Taita Taveta county, that we came across Ceciliah Mshai. She is a 13-year-old girl who has both albinism and mental disability/autism. She has no speech and rans away from people. Mshai was abandoned by her mother when she was 2 years old and now lives with her 60-year-old grandmother, Jerusha Wakesho, who is a single mother. We found her seated alone in the scorching sun, with no sunscreen nor any protective clothing. Usually, her grandmother is forced to lock her up when she needs to ran errands. Ms Wakeshi has mobility difficulties, putting in mind that vesu area is quite hilly and rocky.
Mshai requires prescription glasses and needs to be registered as a member of the NCPWD. She also needs to be enrolled into the cash transfer program for persons with severe disabilities and if possible, be taken to a home that takes care of children with mental disabilities. A proper assessment to determine her type of cognitive impairment is required. Anybody who would like to help kindly get in touch via 0721864949 or 0710841183.
